Before moving an academic course, identify which grading and feedback practices you need to preserve. The first pilot should follow a real assignment, not just a video lesson.
Record what a grade means
For your current Canvas course, list the activities that contribute to a grade, the marking criteria and the person responsible for the final record. Distinguish course completion from assessed achievement.
A new platform’s progress indicator may measure something different. Write the intended meaning before comparing screens.
Rehearse marking and revision
Use an original sample assignment with a marking rubric. Ask a teacher to assess it, return feedback and handle a revised submission. Compare the sequence in the proposed PrepOS setup.
Check whether the learner can distinguish the first submission from the revision. If the workflow needs manual steps, assign an owner and include their time in the evaluation.
Keep history and content separate
Lessons, question banks, old submissions and official grades are different migration categories. Confirm which can move and which must remain available elsewhere. Preserve the original record until your responsible team approves the plan.
Canvas may remain the appropriate home for an institutionally managed course. PrepOS may fit a standalone academic offer when the demonstrated teaching workflow and operating model meet its needs. Do not infer a faster rollout or better outcomes from the product category alone.
Sources and next steps
Check Canvas’s official information and the PrepOS comparison against the exact packages you are evaluating. This is a PrepOS-authored pilot checklist, not an independent benchmark or a claim that the competitor lacks every workflow discussed.
