A Moodle migration starts with preserving the teaching material that already works. Test question fidelity, access and administration before deciding whether a move is worthwhile.
Do not start by dismissing Moodle
Moodle has established assessment and question-bank workflows. Its import documentation describes several formats and recommends Moodle XML for retaining more question data. A different platform does not automatically provide deeper assessment capabilities.
First write down what your current installation does well and what you need to change. Separate learner experience, commercial operations and maintenance responsibilities.
Export a representative sample
Choose questions with different answer structures, feedback, images and mathematical notation. Keep an unchanged source copy. Record the expected correct answers, marks and categories before testing conversion.
Do not assume Moodle XML, GIFT or another export can be uploaded directly to PrepOS. Agree a supported mapping and conversion scope with the implementation team. Unsupported question types need an explicit decision, not silent simplification.
Verify the learner experience
Compare the converted questions against the original. Test correct and incorrect answers, feedback timing and the resulting score. Then build a small practice set and have a teacher review it on desktop and phone.
Treat historical attempts, grades, student accounts and content as separate migration categories. Each may have a different transfer method or retention requirement. Do not promise a complete history transfer until it has been demonstrated.
Decide whether the move is justified
Moodle may remain the right choice when its current workflows meet your needs and administration is well supported. Consider PrepOS when a representative pilot demonstrates a better fit for your academic course business and the implementation responsibilities are clear.
Agree acceptance criteria, a content freeze, a student communication plan and a rollback owner before scheduling a move. The migration checklist and Moodle comparison provide the next planning steps.
This guide is written by PrepOS. It is not a claim that Moodle is unsuitable for commercial courses or that migration is lossless. Documentation checked on September 8, 2026.
